LLBG advances on carbon reduction roadmap: net-zero targets approved by Science-Based Targets initiative

Great news! LLBG’s greenhouse gas reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative as fully conform with the ‘SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard’. This milestone confirms that we are doing what science says is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C. LLBG commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050. To achieve this, both near and long-term targets have been set. Our GHG reduction roadmap focuses on transitioning to green energy, working with suppliers on decarbonization plans and accelerating the shift to regenerative agriculture.

At LLBG, we recognize the importance of climate action and the role companies can play to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Global warming is a major threat for humanity that can only be tackled if we all together – farmers, suppliers, governments, producers, customers and consumers – step up.

LLBG’s goal is to limit global temperature rise in line with 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To do so, we have set ourselves ambitious targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), fully endorsing the need to rapidly reduce the GHG emissions across our value chain and achieve net-zero GHG emissions before 2050.  We strive to reduce our scope 1 & 2 emissions faster than what science requires, and aim to reduce scope 1 & 2 to zero by 2039. This will be a milestone step to reach our net-zero SBTi target.

LLBG formally committed to SBTi in April 2023. Our GHG reduction targets were submitted in December 2023 and have now been validated as being fully conform with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard.

"As a leading bakery company, we want to demonstrate leadership in the transition to a low-carbon economy, even if this requires fundamental changes to our operations and sourcing strategy. We’re proud that the SBTi has approved our greenhouse gas reduction targets. While the SBTi roadmap is extremely challenging, especially for a growing company, it provides a clear roadmap and gives us confidence that we are doing what science says is necessary to limit global warming. This validation marks an important milestone in our sustainability journey, becoming not only a bigger but above all a better company.”

LLBG’s SBTi commitment involves four key areas

  1. Transitioning to 100% green electricity by 2030, while also increasing our energy efficiency with 2-4% per year.
  2. Transitioning to zero-carbon energy sources by 2039.
  3. Working with our value chain on decarbonization plans, encouraging our suppliers to also align with science and commit to science-based and net-zero SBTi targets.
  4. Accelerating the shift to regenerative agriculture practices to reduce GHG emissions but also to restore soil health and improve biodiversity.

LLBG’s SBTi commitment involves four key areas
LLBG’s GHG reduction journey has already started. In 2023, we managed to curb our carbon emissions, emitting 9% less GHG emissions than in 2022. The main driver for this reduction was the switch to 100% renewable electricity in our bakery production site in Poland.
